How to Start Your Own Minecraft Server and Get Players

Oct 30, 2026

Starting a Minecraft server is easy. Getting people to stay is the hard part. This guide covers both, in the order you should do them.

Step 1 Decide what your server is

Before you touch any settings, write one sentence that explains why a player should join you and not one of thousands of others. Examples are a friendly survival world with land claims, a skyblock with custom islands, or a PvP arena for practice. A clear idea helps you choose plugins, name the server and later describe it on a server list.

Check what is already popular. Browse categories such as survival, skyblock, prison or lifesteal and see how existing servers present themselves. Pick a niche you can do better, not the biggest one.

Step 2 Choose where it runs

A small server with up to 20 players runs well on a modest plan, but memory needs rise with plugins and world size. Start small and upgrade when you see lag.

Step 3 Pick the software

Paper is a popular choice for survival, skyblock and most community servers. It is based on the official server, handles many players better and supports plugins. Vanilla works if you want no changes. Fabric or similar loaders are used for modded servers. For a network with several game modes you will also use a proxy.

Step 4 Install and start

1. Install a current Java version suitable for your Minecraft version.

2. Download the server jar from the software's official page.

3. Place it in an empty folder and run it once. It creates files and asks you to accept the EULA.

4. Open eula.txt, set eula=true, and start it again.

5. Edit server.properties. The most important values are the port, the maximum players, the difficulty and online-mode, which should stay true so only paid accounts can join.

The default Java port is 25565. If the server runs at home, forward this port on your router. For Bedrock players you can add a bridge plugin, which uses port 19132.

Step 5 Protect and configure

Install a few plugins that every public server needs:

Write simple rules and show them at spawn. Appoint at least one trusted moderator before you advertise.

Step 6 Get your first players

Players do not appear on their own. Use several channels at once.

1. Server lists. Add your server to MineList with a clear description, an accurate version and good screenshots. Lists are where people actively look for a place to play.

2. Voting rewards. Players come back every day to vote when it is worthwhile. Explain how to vote on your website and at spawn.

3. A small website or Discord. Give players one place for news, rules and support.

4. Friends and communities. Invite your first 10 players personally. A server with a few active players attracts others, an empty one repels them.

5. Short videos. Clips of unique features show better than text.

6. Events. Weekly build contests or PvP tournaments give people a reason to log in at a set time.

Step 7 Keep them

Mistakes to avoid

Start small, be consistent and improve week by week. Once your server is listed, ask players to vote and watch it climb the monthly ranking.
